July’s birthstone is the extremely beautiful ruby. Rubies are a precious gem and are a part of the corundum mineral family. Rubies are found in a variety of colours from pink to deep red and are sometimes even found in purple and orange. The intensity of the color and its hue are what determine the value of a ruby. The most valuable rubies are a deep, dark red colour.
Rubies have been appreciated for centuries and were used in jewellry and talismans throughout history. It was believed that rubies could bring good fortune to its wearer and protect from harm. The ruby was also believed to have healing properties, such as improving circulation, providing energy and increasing mental clarity. Ancient Greeks also believed rubies could predict the future and held them in high esteem.
The name ruby originates from the Latin word “ruber” which means red. Rubies are one of the hardest stones and rank 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, just behind diamonds which rank 10. Because of their hardness, rubies are often used in jewellry and are often chosen as engagement rings.
Rubies can be found in many places around the world such as Burma, Thailand, India, Pakistan, and even in the United States. The most valuable rubies come from Burma and are often referred to as “Burmese rubies.” Rubies from these areas tend to have a richer, more intense colour and are highly sought after.
